What is CPIS®?

For more than 15 years Inflowmatix and founding partner, Imperial College London, collected and analysed high speed pressure data from water networks around the world, and established a key metric related to the risk of pipe bursts known as the Cumulative Pressure Induced Stress (CPIS®).

CPIS® was developed to keep track of the full spectrum of dynamic pressure behaviour via a single metric. It refers to the gradual buildup of stress on specific sections of the water network caused by repeated or sustained pressure fluctuations (from surges or transients) over time. Unlike a single catastrophic event, CPIS® is an indicator of repeated stress cycles that accumulate over time, leading to fatigue, micro-cracks, or material degradation. It is a key factor in understanding the lifespan and reliability of pressurised systems.
